Stuff I love right now

Due to a tummy bug that has made sure I have lost weight over Christmas for the first time in living memory, I have found myself on the couch in my PJs all day today. That means I have watched the cricket - day 2 SA vs Sri Lanka, right now SA not looking too good!- and also surfed the net a lot and found some lovely, interesting and beautiful things.

To start with, Check out this gorg jacket, unfortunately i can't get the pic up.
These miniemergency kits from ms & mrs

I have loved vintage tea towels for some time now, and especially love the calendar ones, like this 1970 one

I was really pleased to see that there are people doing new ones, and here's one I found for 2012!

This beautiful dress on SALE at asos.

Yellow shoes!  So cute.

And so much more. Oh to be at the European post Christmas sales.

Pretty flowery bags

I have recently acquired a few great new bags! Many of them just happen to have black backgrounds, and have some flowers going on. Here they are....
The one above is made of an upholstery type fabric, is a good size and has very very cool lucite clasp.

This next one is tapestried and I think it is beautiful. It has perfect black satin lining and is a fair size for a vintage bag. It also has the cutest clasp with two roses on it.

This bag has seen some life and come off second best, but when I saw it's gorgeous hard sided shape and elegant evening size, I could NOT walk away. I really love it.

And now.....

I have never seen another bag like this last one. It is beaded in tiny black seed beads, back, front, handle. everywhere, and then has these tapestried flowers on the front, which I think makes it really special.

That's it for now!

"marché aux puces"

Calque

Used as a verb, "to calque" means to borrow a word or phrase from another language while translating its components so as to create a new lexeme in the target language.

Examples

The common English phrase "flea market" is a phrase calque that literally translates the French "marché aux puces" ("market where one acquires fleas").

Thanks Wikipedia! I love how you make my life interesting and full of diversions!

Anyway, this post did not set out to be a linguistics exercise but rather to talk about a lovely French market held this past Saturday at the Alliance Francaise in Joburg opposite Zoo lake. There was mouthwatering food and many a vintage bargain. What more could one ask for? Yes, company! My wonderful friend Tracy came around to the market and brought an entire entourage! Sonja and her sister and littlies came too and my super saleswoman sister Sam joined me for the whole afternoon. It was great!

Unfortunately this giddy aunt left her camera at home, so there is no proof that I had a fabulous time and sold quite a few gorgeous evening bags, some spectacular beaded gloves and a few other bits and bobs. I hope they have found vintage-loving homes.

That means I will be doing more of my FAVOURITE passtime of all..... trawling for new pieces of vintage WOW to bring to a market near you soon!

wanna cash in on the music business

I love nothing more than a great idea, and this is one! Tunerights is based in Sweden and allows you to buy a share of a song from the composer and share in their earnings should there be any. Can't wait to buy me a hit!

Pushing the envelope (clutch) with colour

I can just feel it and smell it, spring is in the air! In honour of breaking out of our grey and black and navy winter staples, here are three of my current fave envelope clutches in eye-wateringly beautiful shades.

Pink, Yellow and Turquoise/ teal. The equally eye-wateringly bright background is a beautiful silk scarf bought in Hong Kong MANY years ago and never worn (!?)

Scarf

Last week I nearly lost my favourite scarf, YIKES, when I left it in a restaurant. I went back and it was still there. I laughed when I saw this cartoon. THE END.

beaded brilliance

White satin clutch beaded and sequinned to the max.... BEAUTIFUL and coming soon to a vintage sale near you!

This is the back.

Junksale

I bought a few cute things at Deerhunter's monthly junksale yesterday. My fave by far was this men's dress shirt that fits me perfectly. Will have to appropriate cufflinks from the man of the house! Planning to wear this to work tomorrow. (bad photo but nice shirt)

I also got this very sheer top. It is very sweet but Sam said it would be cute with jeans, and I agreed! C'mon summer!

This mustard (don't judge) batwing (continue not to judge) top is the reason I went to Junksale as I had asked the guys from asseblief to keep it for me. I love it! Comfy and styling!

Dankie asseblief!

check this out

I have hardly left the house this weekend and since I am not reading anything good, I have spent a LOT of time online. This is one of the fabbest sites I found. Inslee is an illustrator and not only sells some of her beautiful prints, but she also takes commissions and will paint a pic of you in an outfit of your choice. Love it!

The first 2 are season appropriate, the last is a dream of summer.... sigh

I am in awe

I know I am not alone in ADORING Michelle Obama, who is currently in SA. She seems to be talking about important issues and especially women's issues. And she does it all in great style!here are some of her great SA moments so far. Love!

best shirt ever

I went to the Market on Main in Joburg town on Sunday. It was really lovely, full of great food, cute clothes and beautiful gallery spaces. Of all the things I saw, this Tshirt and the Chocolate Coca Cola cupcakes were joint favourites! Great morning with Mich and Nicci!

melting LPs

I have a bit of a break coming up and am getting to that stage when i start to PANIC about what I will be doing when other people are at work. I also don't want to just waste this opportunity so I am planning a few craft projects. One involves melted LPs... thinking

as promised, more vintage bags

Oh how I love a patent bag, and this one is particularly cute!

This clutch is really sweet. It opens with a clasp on top, even though it looks like it has a flap.... tricky!

I know I have featured this bag before, but here it is again. Love the satin, love the bow!

This is very new (to me). Quite a roomy clutch in a very very usable shade. I think this may spend some time in my wardrobe!
